Instant Pot Fall Off the Bone Baby Back Ribs

The lazy days of summer may be winding down but, barbecue season is still going strong.   Fall off the Bone Baby Back Ribs tops the list of my favorite meat recipes, especially when prepared in an Instant Pot.  Though I usually prepare my ribs in a smoker, I love the ease of making them in a fraction of the time it takes to complete in an Instant Pot.

When it comes to meat, if your pocketbook allows, I always recommend investing a few dollars more in better quality, free-range, pasture-raised, and local chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and turkey whenever possible. You will really taste the difference in flavor and quality of your baby back ribs.

I recently discovered how much I adore Trader Joe’s Organic Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce and Marinade after using it on these ribs. This sweet sauce includes the flavors of brown sugar, caramelized molasses, pineapple juice, hickory smoke, chili peppers, and orange peel set into a tomato base.

Feel free to use your favorite BBQ sauce in this recipe but I highly recommend you give this sauce a try if you have a Trader Joe’s in your area or you can buy it here. The flavor profile works beautifully with pork ribs.

When I think of baby back ribs, I think of Southern Comfort food. While this remarkably tender finger food is the star of the show, I recommend pairing this dish with simple, healthy sides like my Roasted Potatoes Tossed in Garlic Herb Sauce and my Crunchy Everything Sugar Snap Peas.  A perfect partnership for the authentic southern barbecue experience your entire family will love. The best part of this meal is it can be ready in a little over an hour.   Happy end of summer!

  1. Rinse and pat dry the ribs before adding salt and pepper to the back and front of the meat.
  2. Place baby back ribs standing up in the Instant Pot. Pour the beef stock or water into the pot and lock the top in place.
  3. Turn the temperature to high pressure and 25 minutes. Once the timer goes off, allow the steam to release naturally for 20 minutes. Using the handle of a utensil, release the valve until all of the pressure is gone. Open the top and transfer the ribs to a lined baking sheet.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F. While the oven is heating, brush the tops and bottom of ribs generously with the BBQ sauce. Transfer the ribs to the oven and bake for 10 minutes.
  5. Cut the ribs in to single sections allowing 3 ribs per serving.
Recipe Notes

Important: For tender, flavorful ribs, ask your butcher to remove the tough membrane on the back of the ribs. Cooking the ribs with the membrane attached results in a tougher texture rib.

Allowing the Instant Pot to release most of the steam naturally results in much more tender meat.
